"Misty Dawn: Portrait of a Muse" presents iconic images as well as previously unpublished material, mined from Sturges' older contact sheets and newest work. That purpose impels Misty Dawn: Portrait of a Muse, a 25-year study of the title subjects physical and psychological transition from small child to married adult. Taken as a whole, this series of images presents a unique, fully realized portrait of a blossoming individual and explores a rare and beautiful relationship between photographer and subject. This volume follows her growth from a shy, tomboyish child to a gorgeous, confident young woman. Lithe, beautiful, classically proportioned, she is the personification of Sturges' philosophy of being at home in one's body. Misty Dawn, one of his primary and most popular muses, is one such subject he has photographed her for 25 of her 28 years. However, if he is trying to do more, and tell us something about life, and people, then his work is far more limited in its success.Over the course of his career, Jock Sturges' long-term engagement with his subjects has been a cornerstone of his work. Whilst praising Sturges' talent and images, Christian Perring questioned what the book was trying to accomplish, stating: "The subtitle of the book is 'Portrait of a Muse,' but as a portrait, it is extremely one dimensional (.) If is just presenting us with striking pictures of attractive nude young women set against a backdrop of nature, he is very successful. Many of the images appear in Sturges' earlier books, including Radiant Identities (1994), though many others were previously unpublished. Most photographs were taken in Northern California some were taken in Montalivet, France. Many images feature other models posing with Dawn, and images range from fully clothed to full nudity. Photos are arranged in chronological order starting from when she was 4 years old. It comprises 100 duotone images of model Misty Dawn taken over a period of 25 years.
